Network inflation (block rewards): Polkadot mints new DOT according to its inflation schedule. Following Referendum 1139, annual inflation started at 8% and is progressively decreasing. Up to 85% of newly minted DOT is allocated to staking rewards, with the remainder directed to the Polkadot treasury.

Chilling risk: Validators that are unresponsive for an entire session may be "chilled" (involuntarily removed from the active set), during which time no rewards accrue. This risk is mitigated by selecting well-maintained validators with a Verified Staking Provider track record.
Nomination pool governance limitation: Pool members currently cannot vote in governance referenda with their nominated funds. This may change in future protocol upgrades. Switching pools requires full unbonding (28 days).
Protocol security risk: Inherent risk of unknown bugs in the Polkadot runtime. This applies to all DOT holdings, not just staked positions.
