Before you can stake any tokens, you firstly need to acquire them; I myself bought them on Binance, but any other exchange might do.
Currently, ICP is available to trade on Binance, KuCoin, Huobi, and Coinbase.
After that, I had to go and register my new Internet Identity here. You can either use a security key, and sign up via your laptop/PC, or use your phone with Screen Lock. Once you have your Internet Identity set up and are logged in, you should see a long wallet address. I sent my ICP from Binance and within a couple minutes I saw them on my main page. Binance charged me a withdrawal fee of 0.0003 ICP.
You can also create and manage your neurons through your command line, via the DFX interface. You will need a minimum of 1 ICP to stake, so being a high spender, I bought 2 ICP just to make sure I had more than enough.
Staking your ICP is as easy as swiping right on the mobile phone browser, clicking ‘Stake Neuron’; deciding on an amount and pressing create. I once again, paid a small transaction fee of 0.0001 ICP to confirm.
The Dissolve Delay (DD) is the time it will take you to unlock your ICP after clicking Start Unlock. To receive any staking rewards, you will need to set your DD to at least 6 months, to receive the max staking rewards you will need to set it to 8 years (which is the maximum). You can decide to increase your DD at any point, but please be aware that you cannot at any point decrease the DD and cannot get your ICP any sooner than the DD you set. You have to make sure that your DD doesn’t fall below 6 months, otherwise, you will not receive any more rewards. You can easily increase your DD afterward, by clicking on your Neuron, and ‘Increase Dissolve Delay’.
The first requirement to receive any Staking Reward is to have a DD of at least 6 months, the second one is to vote on Governance Proposals. To maximize your return, you will need to vote on every single proposal.
To make it easier for you, we are able to follow other voters such that we don’t miss any proposals. I decided to leave the default on, which is to follow the Internet Computer Association. Once you have finished this part, you should see your New Neuron on the screen.
Your Staking Rewards are relative to your DD and your voting history, the longer your DD the higher your rewards, and the more you vote, the higher your rewards. Currently, setting your DD to 8 years, and voting on all proposals will get you roughly 28% APY. This can be increased slightly by compounding your returns. Your reward ICP will update every day in the form of Maturity.
Maturity is displayed as a percentage and is the Return on Investment you have made so far.
As soon as your Maturity % multiplied by Staked ICP is 1 or higher; you can spawn a New Neuron.
Spawning a New Neuron is only possible once your reward is 1 ICP or higher. Once you spawn a new neuron, your current neuron’s maturity will go to 0; and the new neuron will have a staked amount equal to your old Maturity % times Staked ICP.
Newly Spawned Neurons have a DD of 7 days, after which you are free to do what you want with them; either withdrawing them to a different wallet and selling them or adding them back to your first Neuron for compounded rewards.
This means, that by spawning neurons efficiently, you can increase your annual return by compounding the rewards.
