XDC is the native token of XDC Network, an enterprise-grade hybrid blockchain designed specifically for trade finance, tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), and institutional decentralized finance. XDC Network bridges traditional financial infrastructure with blockchain technology.

Token Utilities

Staking & Network Security: XDC holders stake tokens to masternodes or delegate to masternode operators to earn staking yield. The masternode-based consensus provides robust economic security.
Gas Token: XDC is used to pay transaction fees on the network. XDC Network is designed for near-zero gas fees, making it cost-effective for high-frequency trade finance operations and enterprise applications.
Trade Finance Infrastructure: XDC is the native settlement token for trade finance applications built on the network, including tokenized letters of credit, invoices, and trade receivables. The network is integrated with ISO 20022 messaging standards used by traditional financial institutions.
Governance: Masternode operators participate in network governance, with KYC requirements for masternode candidates providing a compliance-compatible governance structure.

21:T7a4,

XDC Network uses XDPoS 2.0 (Delegated Proof-of-Stake 2.0), a Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus mechanism designed for enterprise-grade performance and institutional compliance.

Masternode Architecture: Network consensus is maintained by masternodes, each requiring a stake of 10,000,000 XDC (10 million XDC) to operate. This high-collateral requirement creates significant economic alignment and reduces the risk of malicious node behavior.
KYC Requirement: Masternode candidates must complete Know Your Customer (KYC) verification, making XDC one of the few blockchain networks with built-in identity verification for validators. This is a significant differentiator for institutions operating under regulatory frameworks that require counterparty identification.
Hybrid Architecture: XDC operates both a public mainnet and a private subnet capability. Enterprises can deploy private, permissioned subnets for confidential transactions while anchoring settlement to the public chain, enabling institutional use cases that require data privacy alongside public verifiability.
Epoch-Based Rewards: The network operates on 900-block epochs. At the end of each epoch, block rewards are distributed according to a defined allocation: 40% to masternode operators, 50% to stakers (delegators), and 10% to the foundation.
Performance: XDC Network achieves 2-second block times with deterministic finality, supporting thousands of transactions per second at near-zero cost.

22:T65f,

XDC features a conservative tokenomic model with low inflation and a strong positive real reward rate, making it attractive for institutional yield strategies.

Key Tokenomic Parameters:

Inflation Rate: Low annual inflation, one of the lowest among major staking networks. This conservative issuance limits dilution and supports long-term value preservation.
Staking Yield: Distributed through the epoch-based reward system to masternode operators and their delegators. Benchmark current rates via the Staking Rewards Calculator.
Real Reward Rate: Staking yield substantially exceeds inflation, producing one of the highest positive real yields in the PoS ecosystem, reflecting favorable staking economics.
Staking Ratio: A relatively low percentage of circulating supply is staked, indicating significant room for participation growth.

Reward Distribution Structure:

50% to Stakers (delegators)
40% to Masternode operators
10% to Foundation

Institutional Consideration: XDC's combination of low inflation and attractive nominal yield produces one of the most favorable real reward rates in the PoS market. The relatively low staking ratio suggests potential yield compression as more participants enter, but it also represents an opportunity for early institutional movers to capture attractive yields before network participation matures.

23:T59b,

XDC staking yield is generated through the network's epoch-based block reward mechanism:

Block Rewards: New XDC is minted each block and accumulated over 900-block epochs. At the end of each epoch, the accumulated rewards are distributed according to the protocol-defined allocation:

50% to Stakers: Delegators who have staked XDC to masternodes receive the majority share of epoch rewards, distributed proportional to their delegated stake.
40% to Masternode Operators: Masternode operators receive a direct allocation for maintaining consensus infrastructure, incentivizing high uptime and reliable performance.
10% to Foundation: A portion of rewards is allocated to the XDC Foundation for ongoing network development, ecosystem grants, and governance operations.

Transaction Fees: XDC Network's near-zero fee design means that transaction fees are a minimal component of staking yield at current network usage levels. As enterprise adoption scales and on-chain trade finance volume grows, fee revenue could become a more meaningful yield component.

Yield Dynamics: With a relatively low staking ratio, current per-token rewards are relatively high. As more XDC is staked, individual staker yields will compress proportionally, following standard PoS yield curve dynamics.

24:T7c1,

Masternode selection on XDC Network directly impacts staking yield and counterparty risk. The Staking Rewards Verified Staking Provider (VSP) Program provides independent certification of staking infrastructure providers. Verified providers display a blue checkmark on Staking Rewards. Refer to the VSP documentation for the full evaluation framework.

Validator selection checklist for institutional delegators:

KYC Status: All masternode candidates must be KYC-verified, providing a baseline level of counterparty identification not available on most blockchain networks. This built-in compliance layer can simplify institutional due diligence and risk committee approvals.
Uptime & Performance: Target masternodes with 99%+ uptime and consistent epoch participation. Missed blocks directly reduce the masternode's reward allocation and consequently delegator yields.
Self-Staked Collateral: Each masternode must stake 10 million XDC as collateral. This substantial self-stake creates strong economic alignment with delegators, as masternode operators have significant capital at risk.
Commission Rate: Evaluate the percentage of delegator rewards retained by the masternode operator. Compare rates across the active masternode set to identify competitive offerings.
Enterprise Focus: Masternodes operated by entities with trade finance expertise or institutional infrastructure backgrounds may provide additional operational reliability and ecosystem alignment.
Geographic Distribution: For risk diversification, consider delegating across masternodes in different jurisdictions and operated by different entities to minimize concentration risk.

25:T911,

Evaluate the following before staking XDC:

Counterparty Risk (Masternode): Delegator returns depend on the masternode operator's performance and reliability. While the 10 million XDC self-stake requirement creates strong economic alignment, underperforming or offline masternodes will generate reduced or no rewards for delegators. Selecting a Verified Staking Provider mitigates this counterparty risk.

Unbonding Period Risk: XDC staking involves a 30-day unbonding period during which tokens are illiquid and earn no rewards. This is a significant liquidity constraint that must be factored into portfolio liquidity models and treasury management.

Staking Ratio Risk: XDC has one of the lowest staking ratios among major PoS networks. While this produces high current yields, rapid increases in staking participation could compress yields significantly. Conversely, the low ratio may indicate limited market awareness, which carries its own adoption risk.

Smart Contract Risk: XDC Network supports EVM-compatible smart contracts. While the core consensus and staking mechanism are well-established, application-layer smart contract risk applies to any DeFi or trade finance applications built on the network.

Ecosystem Concentration Risk: XDC Network's primary use case is concentrated in trade finance. Dependence on a single vertical introduces sector-specific risk. Slower-than-expected enterprise adoption of blockchain-based trade finance could affect network growth and utility demand.

Regulatory Advantage: The KYC requirement for masternode operators and the network's enterprise compliance focus may provide regulatory advantages in jurisdictions with strict validator identification requirements. However, regulatory frameworks for blockchain-based trade finance are still evolving.

Protocol Security: XDC Network's codebase is derived from Ethereum with custom consensus modifications. The network has been operational since 2019, providing several years of production history, though it has a smaller security research community than larger networks.

26:T66c,

XDC staking involves the following lockup and withdrawal parameters relevant to institutional treasury planning:

Delegation: XDC is delegated to masternodes through the network's staking mechanism. Delegated tokens contribute to the masternode's consensus weight and begin earning epoch-based rewards upon activation.
Unbonding Period: Withdrawing staked XDC requires a 30-day unbonding period. During this time, tokens do not earn rewards, cannot be transferred, and remain locked. This is a protocol-enforced constraint.
Epoch-Based Rewards: Rewards are calculated and distributed at the end of each 900-block epoch. The reward allocation follows the fixed 50/40/10 split between stakers, masternode operators, and the foundation.
Masternode Requirements: Operating a masternode requires a minimum of 10 million XDC staked and KYC verification. For institutions considering direct masternode operation, this represents a significant capital commitment alongside the compliance requirements.
Redelegation: Moving delegation between masternodes may require unstaking (triggering the 30-day unbonding period) and restaking. This creates friction for rebalancing masternode allocations.

For institutional treasury operations, the 30-day unbonding period places XDC in the mid-range of PoS lockup periods (comparable to Polkadot's 28 days and longer than Solana's 2-3 days or Cosmos's 21 days). Maintain a liquid XDC reserve for operational flexibility and emergency liquidity needs.

27:T80f,

XDC Network is purpose-built for the institutional trade finance sector, offering differentiated characteristics for allocators with exposure to real-world asset (RWA) tokenization:

Trade Finance Focus: XDC Network is specifically designed for trade finance operations including letters of credit, trade receivables, invoice factoring, and supply chain finance. The network's near-zero transaction fees and fast finality make it suitable for high-frequency commercial transactions.
ISO 20022 Compliance: XDC Network supports ISO 20022 messaging standards, the global financial messaging format adopted by SWIFT, central banks, and major payment systems. This standards alignment facilitates integration with existing institutional financial infrastructure.
KYC-Verified Validators: The mandatory KYC for masternode operators creates a compliance-ready validator infrastructure. For institutions requiring identified counterparties across their technology stack, this is a significant governance and risk reporting advantage.
Hybrid Architecture: The ability to deploy private subnets anchored to the public chain enables institutions to maintain data confidentiality for sensitive trade finance operations while benefiting from public blockchain settlement and verifiability.
RWA Tokenization: XDC supports tokenization of real-world trade assets, enabling fractional ownership, secondary market trading, and programmable settlement of traditionally illiquid trade finance instruments.
Yield + Utility: Staking XDC provides attractive yield with a strong positive real reward rate while simultaneously gaining exposure to the growing blockchain trade finance market. This dual-benefit profile is attractive for institutional portfolios seeking both yield generation and strategic positioning in enterprise blockchain adoption.
